Vintage Guitars Collections for Fun and Profit
By Bill McRea

There are guitars and there are vintage guitars. These are guitars that are celebrated. They cost a bundle. There are guitars that are so revered that you have to be somebody in the guitar world to own one.
The vintage craze or mania is fueled by the assumption that any guitar from the 50's is certainly a rare gem. Jim Miller agrees that a well-built guitar from a bygone era has some magic to it if it also plays well. However, he points out that quality control then was totally nonexistent.
In fact, if you want to hear the truth, you are really advised to be very careful when picking a "vintage" guitar just because it is a guitar that's your grandfather's age. Believe it or not, the best guitars are being made today.
However, that's a different matter. Vintage guitars have their place. And who wouldn't be proud to have a '54 Strat or '58 Les Paul? But you have to be really rich to be able to lay your hands on these guitars.
There are wise considerations to make when buying vintage guitars: Are you buying a vintage guitar to make a point as a guitarist or are you doing it as an investment (much like folks buy stock that they believe will appreciate and so make them rich)?
If you are buying a vintage guitar to enhance your image as a guitarist, all well and good. There's no way going on stage with a '54 Strat won't set you apart (that's if you can afford it). There's no way a '58 Les Paul won't make you the envy of every guitarist in your town. So if that seems a good return on your investment, then go for it.
However, if you are doing it as an investment you want to turn you into a wealthy person within a decade or so, then you need a lot of experience and caution here.
You'll need to have more than a casual knowledge of guitar history. You'll need to understand the trend in technology. You'll need to predict correctly what the future guitarist will rave about the past.
If you can do all that well, then you can truly build a fortune investing in vintage guitars. However, if you can't, you'd be better off buying stock from a blue chip company and leave those vintage guitars for those who know what to do with them.
